Stony Brook University Center for News Literacy
The Center for News Literacy at Stony Brook University was established in 2007 by President Shirley Strum Kenny. It is committed to teaching students how to use critical thinking skills to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports and news sources. It is the only such center in the United States. Funded by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Center currently is committed to teaching News Literacy to 10,000 undergraduates—from across all academic disciplines. The Center also is at work developing innovative curriculum materials for high schools and the general public. Many of these initiatives are funded by grants from the Ford Foundation. With support from the Ford Foundation and McCormick Foundation, the Center convened a national conference, News Literacy: Setting a National Agenda, March 11-13, 2009, and launched a News Literacy high school teacher training program in June 2009.

School of Journalism
Established in September 2006, Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism is the first and only undergraduate journalism school in New York State’s public university system. Journalism students learn how to find and report the truth without compromising integrity or traditional journalistic standards. They work in one of the most technologically advanced newsrooms in the country and produce work across multimedia platforms for both traditional and non-traditional audiences. Home to the nation’s first Center for News Literacy, Stony Brook is also dedicated to educating news consumers and offers the only university-wide course in News Literacy in the country.
